Just so sad. I happened to read a report in the "STAR" newspaper that according to one NGO there are some poor parents who are substituting infant formula with diluted condensed milk, rock sugar water, black coffee and even plain tea to feed their infants and toddlers! According to the NGO , parents with low incomes of under RM1,500.00 with an average of three children have even reduced feeding infant formula from five times a day to only twice a day! According to the NGO the mothers could not produce breast milk as they are undernourished themselves!
Oh Dear ! That is one of the most distressing news I have read about recently. What has happened to us ? Were we not gloating in the not too distant past of being capable of sending "tourists" into space to make teh tarik? Did we not gloat and boast at our ability in building the Twin Towers; touted as one of the tallest buildings in the world ? The country that hosts formula one car races and other world world sporting events surely does not have this problem. Surely this cannot happen in a country that spends millions of RM to send its citizens on expeditions to the South pole, up the Everest and even to navigate solo around the globe in a boat! Surely this report cant be true.
But then again, why did the "STAR" carry this story if it was not true ? Never mind the fact that it was carried at the bottom of page 6 of the "Paper that cares". Never mind the fact that this story ought to have been carried on page one of the day's paper. Well, at least the story was reported.
So now that the story is out, why is there no "committees to look into this matter","fact finding missions" or even "investigations" being carried out to verify this story ? Hello.... every one on "kursus" or "lawatan sambil belajar" is it ? Please someone in the government...please do something. This cannot be allowed to happen here.
I don't know about you but that story if true is one of the most distressing things I've heard. I cant imagine a child/infant being deprived of its basic sustenance to survive here in Malaysia. Sure I've heard about starvation in Somalia or Uganda but last time I checked this was still Malaysia! I am sad. In fact very sad. Well it appears all these recent price hikes are really hurting the rakyat.
So, the question then; How to solve this problem? Maybe start a fund in the name of "Help feed our starving Malaysians" ?
Sad today,
M V Nathan
