Who is policing the police ?

Wonder who is policing the police ?

Why are there reports of theft in the police stations these days ? Every other day these days we read about how the exhibits in certain cases go missing. And the strange thing is they go missing in the Police Stations ! As a matter of fact it is beginning to be quite a norm these days. Looks like we have to get a special police force just to police the police. As a an average Joe Public I state out loud and clear the following words. I have lost all confidence in the police force.

I can give you many reasons why i say so and list some of them below. My list is not exhaustive and is not listed in priority.

1) The rampant use of excessive force as in the Bandar Mahkota Cheras incident;

2) The failure of the police force in ensuring that the forum at the Bar council was not interrupted by hooligans and extremists;

3) Failing to arrest all who had made "racial slurs" and "threats of violence" against the organisers of the forum at the Bar Council and its participants;

5) The selected use of water canons and batons during illegal assemblies;

6) Failing to make arrests during certain illegal assemblies;

7) The loss of material evidence in certain cases;

8) "That is for us to know" mentality as illustrated in the latest loss of evidence case in Seremban;

9) Perceived rampant corrupt practices;

10) Shoddy investigations.

Do I need to list down more ?

I say that what we need is the setting up of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC). The setting up of such body is vigorously opposed by the police presently. They argue that they will be subservient to the body and therefore cannot function independently. I don't think these sort of arguments hold any water. Initially the government was in full support of the IPCMC but later in true "flip flop" policy that it holds, decided against it!

Will we ever see the setting up of the IPCMC here in our beloved nation ?

Cheers,
M V Nathan
